If you lose your SIM card, it is crucial to take immediate action. Sensitive information such as call records, financial data, work documents, passwords, and other personal information can be compromised if your device or SIM card falls into the wrong hands.

To prevent this, please take the following steps.

  • Contact your mobile operator: Immediately inform our support team about the loss or theft of your SIM card. Be ready to answer security questions that validate your ownership of the SIM, and we will block the SIM card instantly to prevent unauthorized use. You can dial *123*7*4# or *123*7# and select option 4 to block a stolen line. The affected number will be required and you will be asked some security questions before the line will be blocked, if the details provided are correct.
  • Contact financial institutions: Inform your bank about the loss or theft of your SIM card. They can suspend any mobile banking services associated with your SIM card and place restrictions on your bank accounts. This cuts off the possibility of monetary loss from your account even after blocking your SIM card by your Telecom provider. Criminals can still read your messages and view your contact list. So, if your bank details or personal information like BVN, NIN etc is saved as a contact, or an SMS receipt from your bank is assessed, you’re still at risk.
  • Retrieve the line and unblock SIM: Once you’re ready, visit an MTN office with your VNIN or NIN for a SIM replacement. This will attract a token fee. The same process to unblock your SIM will be implemented. With your SIM restored you can have your bank access on your phone line reactivated.
  • File a police report: If your SIM card was stolen, you may consider filing a police report, especially if there is the possibility of fraud. This documents the theft for law enforcement agencies, keeps you on the right side of the law, and aids recovery efforts.

There are apps that can help with the security of your phone – Find My Device’ helps to wipe sensitive information and locate your device. For the latter, please remember the potential risks involved in going after criminals. For safety reasons, it is best to involve the police.

Acting quickly is crucial to protect your personal information in the event of a loss. Take a deep breath, follow these steps, and empower yourself to handle the situation effectively.
